We require a volunteer ambulance officer to hold a senior first aid certificate and an unrestricted C class drivers license.

St John Ambulance volunteers play a vital role in communities throughout Western Australia. When you become a volunteer ambulance officer you are taking a step toward becoming one of our most precious community resources, helping to ensure that the country communities of WA have access to high quality ambulance services and pre-hospital care.
Coming from all walks of life, volunteers may be parents, full-time, part-time or shift workers – even students. No matter what they do, it's their generous contribution that helps us maintain essential services right around the State.
You too can help make a difference in your community by volunteering. There are roles to suit all types of people, so you can be involved at a time and in a position that suits you.
General Requirements
It is easy to join! To be successful you will be required to submit an application form including details required for an up to date police clearance and complete our medical questionnaire.
Benefits
Volunteer ambulance officers receive the highest quality training which equips them with the essential basic and intermediate life support skills to assist them in stabilising patients en route to hospital.
St John Ambulance WA provides training at the sub centre for all volunteers and training is conducted to a level at which the volunteer will feel comfortable, confident and ready for the road.
In addition to the initial training, an ongoing skills maintenance program for volunteers is also provided at the local sub centre in cooperation with your regional training coordinator.
Different training levels are available, giving volunteers the flexibility to choose the level of training they wish to achieve.
The following courses are provided free of charge to all volunteer ambulance officers:
Level 1 – this course trains people with a Provide First Aid qualifications to a level where they can become an active member of an ambulance crew, to assist in attending to emergency callouts and inter-hospital transfers. It forms the first 16 hours (one weekend) of your training journey.
Level 2 – this course is available to Level 1 volunteer ambulance officers, reinforces skills taught in the Level 1 course as well as additional information and skills to be able to stabilise most injuries in the field, as well as manage and transport ill and injured patients. Upon successful completion of the Level 2 course, ambulance officers are certified to use some advanced life support skills. This course is conducted over three (usually non consecutive) weekends.
Continuing Education Program - volunteer ambulance officers who have passed the Level 1 or 2 course maintain their qualifications through an ongoing annual skills maintenance programme. Additional training is provided through scenarios and multi-agency SIMEXs (Simulated emergency exercises).
Fitness Requirements
Although there are no fitness requirements, a completed medical questionnaire is required as part of our volunteer recruitment process. This questionnaire will be reviewed and if any medical conditions exist, we may require clarification and sign off by your general practitioner. If a pre-existing medical condition does exist that prevents you from carrying out specific duties, we may have another volunteer role more suitable for you.
